I see ewe! But just barely. I can’t believe how the grass has grown down in the pasture since my ewes decided to come home last month. Earlier this week Darling and I brought not only Taffy and Bessie down, but Pokey and Carrot (the rams) as well. To help keep them inside the fenceline, the girls get staked on long ropes during the day, and I get to go down several times to be sure they haven’t gone and tangled themselves up. Which, ususually, they don’t.
If someone could please explain to me why a sheep would want to jump over a fence from a pasture like this, above, into the dead blackberry patch pictred below….well, I’d be mighty obliged. Personally, I just can’t figure it out. And yet was there with the camera as Pokey began contemplating the leap. I chased him off before he actually did it.
We may just have to do another lambing prediction here. What do you think? Bessie could be due anytime, really. She was with the ram for two months and I’d really thought she’d have taken earlier and lambed by now. Her udder is getting bigger, but no signs of vulva swelling (I’ll spare you the photos again!) She’s also not showing around the middle like Taffy was, although she’s a great deal longer and taller than Taf, so she could easily be hiding a single. Not fair the way some girls are able to do that, is it? I got as big as a house with both of my kids.
So how about offering up some dates for lambing for this girl? Say, anything between now and the end of July? Winner gets a basket full of goodies, such as sheep milk soaps, lotion, lip balm…I’ll start stuffing a basket and y’all start listing dates. Is it a deal?
Bessie the Beautiful
Now…the winner yesterday? Y’all really had to work on this one, and I must admit the story that came along with Bluepaintred’s made me smile, but in the end? Rachel, with Chain of Command! Congratulations, Rachel. Very fitting since it was a US Border Patrol horse! You can email me at desperatehorsewife at gmail.com…of course, with an @ instead of at 🙂
