Red at Night, Sailor’s Delight
Red in the Morning, Sailor’s Take Warning…
Or so that’s what I’ve always been told. A red sky in the morning would mean a nasty day ahead for sailors, but in the evening? That meant a day of smooth sailing. Thankfully, that photo above was taken last night, which means today should be good. We’ll see!
Yesterday was certainly smooth sailing. The sun came out at the market, and so did the people. I was moved into Candace’s old space, and folks came along looking for her, naturally. I had a half price sale on my soaps just to get them interested in trying someone new, and it seemed to work.
Behind, and even overhead, of my booth is a Madrona Tree. These are the most interesting trees in the northwest, I think. A lovely, smooth, rich red trunk that peels away to reveal a spring green each summer.
Naturally, my photographer went straight to work getting creative shots!
Madrona trees are northwest natives and grow only near water. You’ll find them all along the coast from CA to WA, actually, in temperate climates. They don’t appear to have a preference as to whether it’s salt water or fresh; they grow along the lake here, and down at the market they line the sound (salt water.) It’s unfortunate that they appear to enjoy the same veiw as we humans, as many have been sacrificed for the sake of million dollar veiw homes. Thankfully, there are many parks lining the shorelines here in WA, and the madronas are doing well.
Darling and I are headed to a clinic today; Horseman’s Western Dressage, with Ruben Villasenor. He does all those fancy dressage steps with his horses, but rides in a western saddle. I’m looking forward to seeing what he’s got to offer in terms of ground training for young horses.
Have a great rest of the weekend, and don’t forget to vote!
I opened your blog, saw a picture of those two sheep, then went to vote for you. When I clicked back: this beautiful sunset photo. Talk about good timing…
And thanks for the treat today. I remember those trees and was always fascinated with peeling the old bark off. My kids called it “the skin.” I’d forgotten about them. Thanks for the memories. We used to live in Portland; then in Vancouver, WA–but only for 14 years.
Have a great weekend.
Have a great time at the clinic. How do you like the weather? It’s supposed to be at least partly sunny all the way through the 4th. I’m excited and really hoping the weather man is right. I need to scrape the mold off my feet and recoat my shoulders with rust protection.
Have a great weekend. I can’t wait to hear about the clinic.
I love the Madrona’s – they make such a nice contrast in the woods. I see them when driving up Hwy 101 – on my way to Sequim.
I have always loved the word “dressage.” You just reminded me of that!
Same here…. Red sun in the morning, sailors take warning. Red sun at night, sailor’s delight. 🙂
